This blog will be in no particular order, just a place to post non portfolio images and associated stories as I travel throughout my career as a visual artist.

All Saints Celebration

I've decided to combine this past couple days into one post as its been a long weekend and it all ties together.

I had the great honor and privilege to be invited again to photograph the All Saints Celebration for the WI Army National Guard.  The last time this event was held was in 2014, and it holds a special place in my heart as it was one of my first gigs upon deciding to become a full time photographer.  The event this year was held at the Chula Vista Waterpark resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI.  About 2 hours from where I live.

If your new to this blog/site/ or whatever I currently serve in the WI National Guard as a the BDE (Brigade) S6 NCOIC for the 64th Troop Command (think communications) and it just so happens this year it was my unit that was asked to host the event.  Naturally there was no way I was going to say no (plus the last time I shot this, I was asked to come back for the next one:) ).

The last time shooting this I shot it more reserved and with a photojournalistic style.  Since that time and now I have shot WAY more events than I care to count, and the one thing people always want is (especially in a formal environment is pics of them and there sig. other).  Walking out the door, I had no idea about the event layout, the hotel, the timeline, but as always grab a bunch of gear just in case.  As well as my normal camera/lens kit, I ended up grabbing 2 strobes, 2 softboxes, my battery boxes(Vagabond Lithium Extreme's) and a black backdrop.

In hindsight I wish I had brought way more equipment, the portrait idea was a a backup, but became a huge hit! 10 min into the start of the evening, I had a line a mile long.  These aren't the best in the world, I would have love to add a larger backdrop and some definition lighting with an additional strobe behind all the people.  I had the strobe, but in my haste to leave I forgot an additional light stand. :(

Now what the heck is the All Saints???  ---> see this article here https://dma.wi.gov/DMA/news/2014news/14027

This was from the first one, and can give a way better explanation than I can type up:)

Now why aren't you wearing your ASU's?  Great question, (and YES I have them all done up, there's proof on FB...LOL)  I feel working an event such as this I want to go as Sean, not SSG Huolihan.  It is much easier to connect with the subjects being more relaxed, and plus had I shot this event style, getting crazy shots would be very difficult in ASU's.  I'm thinking next time I'll dress up.

Now, comes the time to edit the 800+ pics from the weekend and push them out to the great men and women of the WI National Guard.

Unfortunately I don't have a BTS of the setup from the event, but I can say it was a 2 light setup, D810, the usual.  After arriving home on Sunday, not much was going on except the Packer game and motivation dropped out completely.  Today was spent editing, and tomorrow I will get back to the products.  Cheers.

***The full gallery of pictures will be up soon, I will update a link here, AND email out all of those who wrote one down.   Also, the 64th TC thanks those who donated, that money went to the unit to help cover the enormous cost of this event.
